A silylmetallocene cpd. contg. at least 1 metallocene gp. and at least 1 silylidene gp., is prepd. by reacting (I) a metallocene of formula (C5Hy)M(C5H4)(-R1-C(R5)=CH2)n with (II) a halosilane of formula in presence of a hydrosilylation catalyst, followed by redn. of the prod. to form the metallocene cpd., and extn. of this from the mixt. M = Fe, Os, Ru, Ni, Co, Mn or Ti; R1 = an (un)satd. aliphatic gp., an aromatic gp., or an alkenyl carbonyl gp., all opt. substd., or may be absent; R5 = H or a (substd.) aliphatic or aromatic gp.; n = 1 or 2; y = 5-(n-1); X = Cl, Br or iodine; R2, R3 = H or a (substd.) aliphatic or aromatic gp. - (I) is a vinylalkenyl-ferrocene. (II) is dimethylchlorosilane.
