PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive and easily handlable polarizing element by sandwiching a thin layer consisting of a single crystal of NaNO2 or MnCO3 with transmittable optical members. CONSTITUTION:The thin layer of the single crystal consisting of NaNO2 or MnCO3 is sandwiched by the transmittable optical members by which the polarizing element is formed. The relation between the thin layer 10 of the single crystal consisting of NaNO2 and prisms 12, 14 is such that the one light nalpha of two beams of the linearly polarized light polarizing in the directions orthogonal with each other out of the light made incident on the prism 14 is totally reflected by the thin layer and that the other light ngamma transmits said layer. The ordinary ray (o) made incident on the prism 14A transmits the thin layer 10A of the single crystal and the extraordinary ray (e) is totally reflected by the layer 10A in the case of the single crystal consisting of MnCO3. The incident light is thus separated to two beams of the light polarized linearly in the directions orthogonal with each other.
