PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance inexpensively and safely, by reacting phenyldimethylsulfonium methyl sulfate obtained from thioanisole and dimethyl sulfate with p-isobutylacetophenone. CONSTITUTION:Thioanisole is reacted with dimethyl sulfate to give a compound shown by the formula I, which is reacted with a compound shown by the formula II in the presence of powdery alkali hydroxide (e.g., NaOH) at 15-55 deg.C to give a compound shown by the formula III. The reaction is carried out in a solvent (e.g., halogenated hydrocarbon) immiscible with water, the reaction mixture is washed with water, and subjected to fractional distillation to recover preferably the solvent, thioanisole, and the compound shown by the formula III, respectively. The solvent and thioanisole are reusable.
