A nuclear fuel assembly, or stringer, has a graphite sleeve. A rib-and-groove profile is formed on the outer surface of at least a major part of the sleeve. The ribs are narrower than the grooves, and the direction of the ribs and grooves has a component along the length of the sleeve.
