PURPOSE:To provide a thermal transfer recorder which can easily record continuously gradated images with high quality, by limiting the particle diameter of a particulate ink transfer adjuvant and the contact pressure between an ink layer and a recording medium to within specified ranges. CONSTITUTION:A thermal transfer layer 130 comprises an ink material layer 120 in which one or a plurality of particles of the particulate ink transfer adju vant 123 are provided in the area of each of picture elements corresponding to temperature rise recording signals 301, 302. The diameter phi of the particles 123 is selected to be greater than the thickness (t) of the ink material layer 120 part. In addition, it is necessary to set the pressure 512 (400) exerted by a recording head 510 in the range of 2.5-4kg/cm<2>. Accordingly, a continuously gradated image with high quality can be recorded.
