PURPOSE:To provide the titled compsn. which has excellent flame retardance and resistance to heat and moist head, does not emit harmful gas during a fire and is suitable for use as insulating material and cushioning material, by blending an org. blowing agent contg. a volatile org. compd. having specific properties with a polyether imide. CONSTITUTION:An org. blowing agent contg. at least 10wt% volatile org. compd. (e.g. acetone) having a solubility parameter deltac satisfying conditions represented by the formula (wherein deltac is solubility parameter of polyether imide), a specific inductive capacity of 15 or above and a b.p. of 80 deg.C or blow under atmospheric pressure and optionally other volatile org. compd. (e.g. dichlorotetrafluoroethane or pentane) is prepd. 5-40pts.wt. said org. blowing agent is blended with 100pts. wt. polyether imide to obtain the desired expandable polyether imide compsn. The compsn. gives a polyether imide foam wherein at least 80% of cells is closed cell.
