The generator is used for evaluation of material characteristics. The unit has a vacuum tube (1) with a photo cathode (2) on the internal curved surface. The cathode receives light (10) from an external source and emits photoelectrons that are transmitted past focussing electrodes (4). Reflection voltages are generated (7) and are applied to electrodes (3a,3b) to produce emissions that are received by metallic target elements (6a,6b,6c) mounted on a transparent window surface (5). By applying a suitable voltage the X-ray emission may be directed onto a specific target element.
