PURPOSE:To obtain a prostaglandin ester or amide in high yield, by esterifying or amidating prostaglandin with a hydroxyl group or an amino group of cell membrane-permeating substance containing the hydroxyl group or amino group. CONSTITUTION:A carboxyl group at the 1-position of prostaglandin is esterified with a hydroxyl group of a cell membrane-permeating substance (e.g., anthracene-9-methanol, or retinol) containing the hydroxyl group or amidated with an amino group of a cell membrane-permeating substance (e.g., aminoanthracene, or aminacrine) containing the amino group. The esterification is carried out by mixing prostaglandin with anthryldiazomethane in a solvent, and the amidation is done by using a coupling reagent. Prostaglandin has a wide range of physiological action showing hypotensive action, diuretic action, bronchodilatory action, uterotonic action, thyroid stimulating action, inhibitory action on secretion of acid in the stomach, etc.
