PURPOSE:To carry out the conversion of a monoalkylbenzene to the titled substance in vapor phase, by using a silica-supported catalyst prepared by treating a crystalline chromosilicate with a gas containing silicic acid ester, and calcining the product in an oxygen-containing gas. CONSTITUTION:A monoalkylbenzene (preferably the carbon number of the alkyl group is 1-3) is converted to a 1,4-dialkylbenzene (e.g. p-xylene, p- ethyltoluene, etc.) in vapor phase, by using a catalyst supporting >=0.1wt% silica and prepared by treating a crystalline chromosilicate with a gas containing a silicic acid ester, and calcining the treated product in an oxygen-containing gas. The silicic acid ester is preferably methyl silicate, etc., and is optionally diluted with nitrogen, etc., to 5-100vol%, and treated at 200-400 deg.C in vapor phase. EFFECT:The selectivity of the 1,4-isomer is extremely high. USE:A starting raw material of a functional polymer. |
