PURPOSE:To obtain a proper KANA (Japanese syllabary) character conversion output with high efficiency by limiting the character strings to be retrieved by the type of syllables for retrieval of a dictionary when a dictionary is retrieved with a character string obtained by converting the long vowel symbols into characters with respect to a character string including the long vowel symbols. CONSTITUTION:When a character string including long vowel symbols is supplied, a long vowel symbol is converted into 'A' with 'A-row' of a preceding adjacent syllable and into 'I', 'U', 'I' or 'E' and 'U' or 'O' with 'I-row', 'U-row', 'E-row' and 'O-row' respectively. These converted long vowel symbols are outputted. Thus the dictionary retrieving time can be reduced greatly with application of such conversion rules to the long vowel symbols. Here these conversion rules to the long vowel symbols are decided based on the bias of presence of Japanese words.
