A carboxymethyl starch exhibiting good antireprecipitation properties and capable of being used as antireprecipitation agent in detergent compositions is prepared as follows: an oxidised starch which has an alkaline fluidity of 20 to 50 ml is reacted with an alkali and an alkali metal salt of chloroacetic acid. This reaction is carried out in an alkaline medium on rotary rolls. The carboxymethylation is carried out to a degree of substitution of between 0.05 and 0.2.
