For the purpose of achieving rapid operation in the case of a piston-cylinder arrangement used for driving a welding electrode (1) and having braking of the movement of the electrode (1) towards the workpiece (2), use is made of a piston arrangement (6) with two pistons (7, 8), of which one piston (7) is arranged in axially movable fashion on a shank (9) of the piston arrangement in such a way that it enables the connection of a pressure duct (16) leading to a pressure space (22) in front of the other piston (8) to a compressed-air source only when, on completion of the working stroke, the electrode (1) is resting on the workpiece (2) (Fig. 3). <IMAGE>
