In an apparatus for the mechanical assembly of workpieces from components, in particular for fitting components on electric circuits, gripper arms are provided on a first support mounted rotatably about a first axis, which gripper arms are displaceable radially to this axis in the longitudinal direction, are designed as plunger-like elements and in each case have a component receptacle at their radially outer end. Each gripper arm on the first support driven in timed sequence has a dog which engages in a cam of a second support which is driven in a continuously rotating manner about the same axis. The drive of the two supports as well as the design of the cam are here selected in such a way that, during a certain stoppage phase of the first support, preferably two gripper arms lying diametrically opposite on the axis are moved radially outwards in order to remove a component from a component feeder or transfer a component to the workpiece to be assembled.
