PURPOSE:To eliminate the test and write operation for detecting faulty picture elements by performing the position detection and recording of the faulty picture elements automatically which are included in two-dimensional solid pickup elements using the data used at the time of image pickup of a reference light source for correcting of output level and sensitivity of each picture element. CONSTITUTION:Two high and low reference light sources are picked up, and an offset and a sensitivity correction factor is found by comparing those outputs at each picture element with a microprocessor 4. In other words, when the outputs from low and high reference light sources recorded in frame memory A7 and B7 respectively are compared with each other by the microprocessor 4, the address of faulty picture element is inputted to a faulty picture element memory 11 as it is. In case of a normal picture element, '0' is entered. In case of a faulty picture element, '1' is entered. If the data is '1', an address generating circuit 12 generates an address which is the address of a normal picture element near it to correct the faulty picture element.
