The generator contains at least one sensor and a series of signal generators in the form of at least one pair of signal generators, moveable relative to the sensor. Between the succeeding signal generators dividing lines are provided transversely to the direction of the relative movement which generate signals in response to the passage of the sensor, displaceable transversely to the relative movement. The aim and object of the invention is a versatile generator of simple construction which permits the correction of manufacturing and component-related tolerances within a maximum range. In particular the intention is to achieve increased stability of the respective control state by using a Hall sensor with two different control thresholds. To this end the dividing lines are essentially inclined by equal amounts in opposite directions in relation to the direction of the relative movement and the sensor is displaceable along one of the dividing lines. The series of signal generators is a ring magnet with alternating inverse polarity. With more than one pair of signal generators the differently polarised signal generators have different extents and the identically polarised signal generators have the same extent. At the same time the dividing lines of the smaller signal generators diverge and the dividing lines of the larger signal generators converge towards the axis of the ring. <IMAGE>
