In a vacuum brake booster (Fig. 2) with a movable wall (2), sealed off from the vacuum housing (1), and a piston rod (8), coupled to a brake pedal, for the actuation of a control valve (22), by means of which a working chamber (3) of the brake booster can be connected either to a vacuum or to a higher differential pressure, the control valve (22) has a control valve piston (31), axially displaceable in a control valve housing (23), which piston, by way of a reaction element (13), acts on the end of a pushrod (14) which displaces the piston of the master cylinder, the control valve piston (31) having two control edges (39, 40), of which the one control edge (40) controls a valve opening (36) arranged in the control valve housing (23) and making the connection from the external air passage (38) to the working chamber (3), and the other control edge (39) controls the valve opening (36) making the connection from a valve chamber (35), corresponding to the vacuum source, to the working chamber (3), the distance (b2) from the one to the other control edge being at least equal to the distance (d) of the brake-pedal-side edge of the valve opening (36) to the master- cylinder-side edge of the valve opening (36).
