In order to reduce the exhaust gas, fuel consumption and wear, to increase the resale value and to make the operation of vehicles and machines driven by internal combustion engines easier, the engine, after uninterrupted idling for a certain adjustable period of time, is shut off and restarted by operating the accelerator pedal. This is done by means of a sensor on the throttle linkage, which indicates its idling position and by 3 timers with corresponding wiring and 3 relays. At the same time diesel engines hitherto being shut off mechanically are electrically switched off by means of a magnet, also when the ignition is switched off.
