The invention relates to a rubber-metal spring element which is constructed like a sandwich from a large number of rubber layers which are connected to one another via intermediate metal sheets, the two rubber layers which are arranged at the ends in the spring element in each case being connected to a connecting plate. In order to be able to absorb even extreme transverse shear forces without damage, the edges of the rubber layers are constructed as buffer zones which project beyond the intermediate metal sheets, and the spring element which is designed in this manner is inserted into a rigid cup, producing play between the cup surrounding wall and the buffer zones, and is anchored in the cup base via the connecting plate which is arranged on the base side. The shear protection device which is implemented in this way for the rubber layers of the spring element ensures that lateral loads acting on it are absorbed up to a predetermined limit value exclusively by shear deformations of the rubber material, while lateral loads which exceed this limit value are absorbed by the buffer zones, which are constructed on the rubber layers, in the form of a pressure load.
