The invention relates to an apparatus for shaping the base of cans or the like and, in order to utilise existing machine parts, this apparatus is designed as an additional device to a can cutting and brushing machine and has a mandrel 5 serving as a counter-punch during the shaping of the can base and subsequently fed to the brushing station, a die 23 interacting with the said mandrel, and, if required, an ejector 24. The mandrel 5 for receiving the can 7 is arranged between the base-shaping tool 22 and a counterstop 9. The force required for the shaping of the can base acts on the mounting of the mandrel 5 or turret head 4 solely within the limits of the prestressing force of the spring 18, via the gripper system of the device.
