A device for heating and cooling a utility space of a motor vehicle which is driven by an internal combustion engine is described, having a coolant circuit which comprises a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve and an evaporator through which air which is to be fed to the utility space flows, in which circuit the coolant can be fed directly to the evaporator to heat the utility-space air, bypassing the condenser. In order to reduce the response time of the heater and to increase the amount of heat which can be transmitted in this way, a bypass line is provided between the compressor and the evaporator, into which line a heat exchanger is connected which can be acted upon by the intermediary air which can be heated up by the exhaust gases of the internal combustion engine.
