PURPOSE:To produce the titled novel polymer imparted with the characteristic features of cyclic amine such as chelate capturing activity, etc., and useful for the removal of metallic ions from seawater, etc., by reacting a vinylpyridine polymer successively with a specific quaternarizing agent and a specific polyamine. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer having the unit of formula II (R is alkyl; x-z are polymerization degree; x and y may be zero; n is positive integer) can be produced by (1) reacting (A) a vinyl pyridine polymer with (B) an alpha-(omega- halogenoalkyl)malonic acid dialkyl ester as a quaternarizing agent, usually in an aprotic solvent such as DMF t 80-120 deg.C under agitation and (2) reacting the resultant polymer with (C) a polyamine of formula I (m is positive integer) [e.g. N,n'-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1,3-propanediamine].
