PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for labor in reversely fitting a ribbon cassette, by a construction wherein a ribbon feed quantity at the time of moving a carriage for printing is set to be larger than ribbon rewind quantity at the time of returning the carriage. CONSTITUTION:When a printing head 8 is located at a printing position and the carriage 5, 7 is moved for printing, rotation of a gear 33 is transmitted to a spool shaft 18 through a rotation-transmitting mechanism 20, 39, 41, whereby a take-up spool in a ribbon cassette is rotated in the direction for taking up a ribbon R. When the head 8 is located at a non-printing position, connection of the gear 33 and the shaft 18 is released by a releasing means 36, and when the carriage is returned in this condition, rotation of the gear 33 is transmitted to a spool shaft 21 through a rotation-transmitting mechanism 23, 44, 45, 49, whereby a payout spool 27 in the cassette 25 is rotated in the direction for rewinding the ribbon R. In rewinding, when the rewind quantity of the ribbon R is smaller than the take-up quantity of the ribbon R in the preceding printing by a predetermined proportion, a releasing means 52 is operated to release the connection of the gear 33 and the spool 21, whereby a rewinding action is stopped. |
