PURPOSE:To compress a data by using a longitudinal relation by tracing, consid ering as objects a reference scanning spots and an encoding scanning spots a longitudinally continuing length as a continuing mode between a start mode and a completion mode. CONSTITUTION:An image data is added to an image data memory 1, one page is once accumulated, and from the image data memory 1 an image data on two scanning spots of a reference scanning spot and an encoding scanning spot is added to a start mode detecting section 2, a continuing mode detecting section 6 and a completion mode detecting section 9, respectively. In case change points from white to black and from black to white exist only on the encoding scanning spot, a start mode is obtained, in case change points exist on both of the reference scanning spot and the encoding scanning spot, a continuing mode is obtained, and in case change points exist only on the reference scanning spot, a completion mode is obtained. When a detection of the start mode is performed, a boundary of the change point thereafter is longitudinally traced and successively encoded by the continuing mode.
