A frontal sliding seal comprises an annular cylindrical housing (8) having an open end and an annular base (9) at the opposite end, a rigid frontal sliding sealing ring (12) mounted for axial sliding movement within the housing (8) and prevented from rotating relative thereto, a helical spring (16) interposed between the base (9) of the housing (8) and the rigid sealing ring (12), which urges the rigid ring (12) against stop means (17) provided adjacent the open end of the housing (8), and lateral sealing means between the rigid ring (12) and the side wall of the housing (8). These lateral sealing means comprise an elastomeric sealing ring (18) including a central part (19) located between the helical spring (16) and the rigid sealing ring (12), and a peripheral sealing lip (20) in contact with the side wall of the housing (8).
