PURPOSE:To prevent the constitution from being complicated by providing an image sensor to a carriage of a serial printer, applying main scanning through the movement of the carriage, applying sub-scanning by the feeding of a platen to read the image of a medium on the platen. CONSTITUTION:The image sensor 16 is provided to the carriage 13 on which a print head 15 is mounted. In order to read an image, the original 11 to be read by the platen 10 is set, and while the carriage 13 is moved in the direction of space along a guide rail, the image sensor 16 reads an image of each line of the original 11. When the reading for one line's share is finished, the carriage 13 returns along a guide rail 14, the platen 10 is rotated for a prescribed amount to feed the line of the original 11 and start the reading of next line. Thus, even when the image reader is not provided except the printer, the image is read.
