[Also in Division H1] A flexible conductor for implantation in the human body is made of a cord of braided carbon fibres surrounded by an insulating sleeve, which may be an elastomer, e.g. a silicone. Both ends of the conductor are free of insulation and one end may be provided with a terminal ring preferably of platinum. The cord may be hollow or it may have a core of an elastomer which may be made opaque to X-rays by including barium sulphate. The cord is formed by compacting the braid over a metallic core which may be removed subsequently. The conductor may be used as an epicardiac conductor, an endocardial probe or as a catheter. |
