<p>PURPOSE:To obtain a recording medium which has a small gap between a magnetic head and a recording layer and is suitable for high density recording by forming a protective layer consisting of a monomolecular layer of a silane surface active agent on the surface of a magnetic recording layer formed on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic metallic film or magnetic metallic oxide film 2 such as Fe-Ni or Ni-Co is formed by sputter vapor deposition on the substrate 1 and thereafter the film 2 is subjected to dipping, etc. in the soln. of the silane surface active agent expressed by CH2=CH-(CH2)n-SiCl3, (n) is preferably 10-20, then to drying to form the monomolecular adsorption film 5 of the active agent on the film 2. The film 4 is then crosslinked and cured by irradiating an energy beam such as light or electron beam on the film surface, by which the protective layer 3 is formed. The film 5 is otherwise subjected to a plasma treatment in gas contg. F, for example, CF4, etc. to add 7 F thereto and to crosslink the film, thereby improving the surface smoothness. The thick protective layer may be otherwise formed by repeating the dipping of the substrate into the soln. of diborane after the formation of the film4 to add OH to the vinyl group on the surface of the film 4 and subjecting further the film to a silane surface active agent treatment. The uniform protective layer having no pinholes is thus provided to the recording medium.</p> |
