PURPOSE:To omit the switching of a 'katakana' (square form of Japanese syllabary) by fixing 'kana' (Japanese syllabary) characters in an objective character string inputted from a keyboard as 'hiragana' (Japanese syllabary) characters by depressing a non-conversion key only once, and then converting the 'kana' characters inot 'katakana' characters by depressing the non-conversion key again. CONSTITUTION:'kana' characters in a character string inputted from the keyboard 10 are stored in a document buffer 34 as 'hiragana' characters, the character string is inversely displayed and the inverted character string is converted into a normal display character string by depressing the non-conversion key. The 1st depression of the non-conversion key or the 2nd depression is decided in accordance with the status whether the objective character string has been already converted into the normal display character string or not at the depressing of the non-conversion key. If the non-conversion processing is not executed yet, the character string for the non- conversion in the document buffer 34 is converted into the normal display character string and a 'hiragana' flag 33 is turned on. When the non-conversion key is depressed again, whether the 'hiragana' flag is on or not is decided, and when the flag is ON, the character string for the non-conversion is converted into 'hiragana' characters and then the 'hiragana' flag is turned on.
