PURPOSE:To provide a hemostatic agent having improved excellent hemostatic activity of collagen, and effective to stop the bleeding rapidly and easily, by adding and mixing protamine to collagen or gelatin. CONSTITUTION:A hemostatic agent can be produced by adding and mixing protamine to collagen or gelatin, or by bonding protamine to collagen or gelatin with covalent bond by adding a bifunctional crosslinking agent to the mixture. The amount of protamine is preferably 0.01-1g per 1g of collagen. The bifunctional crosslinking agent is e.g. glutaraldehyde, hexamethylene diisocyanate, etc. A large amount of guanidino group of arginine redidue which is a platelet agglutination reaction side of collagen can be applied by the combined use of protamine and collagen, and the hemostatic effect can be improved. The agent is effective especially as a post-operative hemostatic agent using heparin as an antithrombotic agent.
