PURPOSE:To simplify a control system and to improve its speed by determining a reading range while moving a document on the basis of an input start position inputted as a parameter and the line position information of the 1st line and after, and reading out the whole range as one line image. CONSTITUTION:When the 1st line position data Lo is applied from a signal line 1, a line image input start position determining circuit 2 moves the document by length lx. When the 2nd and 3rd line position data L1, L2 are applied from the signal line 1, an input image length determining circuit 3 determines the height L and moves the document to fine out the reading height L. An image input circuit 4 moves the document and inputs the image data of the height L to a line buffer 5. A character recognition block 6 adds a distance from the right end of the document or the sort of characters to the parameter on a signal line 7 and a relative position from the reference line (1st line) is also used as the information for recognition.
