PURPOSE:To obtain a recording speed discriminating device having a simple circuit constitution by dividing the frequency of the output signal from a frequency generator to a frequency approximately equal to the frequency of a reproducing control signal and comparing directly this frequency-divided output signal with the reproducing control signal by a frequency comparator. CONSTITUTION:The frequency of the output signal from a frequency generator is divided to a frequency approximately equal to the frequency of the reproducing control signal by the first and the second frequency dividers 9 and 10, and the frequency of the reproducing control signal is compared with frequencies of output signals of frequency dividers by the first and the second frequency comparators 11 and 12. The first memory means where the comparison result of the first frequency comparator is held and the second memory means where that of the second frequency comparator is held are constituted with RS flip flop circuits, and the recording speed of a magnetic tape is judged to be a high speed, a middle speed, or a low speed in accordance with output states of memory means.
