PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer having excellent gas permeability and mem brane-forming property, by copolymerizing a substituted acetylene compound with a cycloolefin in the presence of a catalyst containing a specified chloride (or bromide). CONSTITUTION:A copolymer comprising repeating units of formulas III and IV is produced by copolymerizing a substituted acetylene compound of formula I with a cycloolefin of formula II in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst includes at least one compound (A) selected from among chlorides and bromides of Mo, W, Nb and Ta and a mixture of compound A with at least one com pound (B), as a promotor, selected from among 1-4C lower alcohols, tetra phenyltin, etc. In the formulae, R1 and R2 are each a group selected from among 1-20C alkyls, 3-20C cycloalkyls, 6-20C aryls, etc., and n is 2-8.
