PURPOSE:The title phosphor with enhanced luminance and moisture resistance, comprising a matrix consisting of (Y1-xGdx)OBr and an activator consisting of Ce. CONSTITUTION:After ammonia water is added to a soln. of Y and/or Gd oxide in nitric acid to adjust the pH, Ce(NO3)4 and oxalic acid soln. are added to coprecipitate rare earth oxalates, which are thermally decomposed to obtain Y and/or Gd oxide doped with Ce. The oxide is fired after addition of NH4Br at 400-600 deg.C for 1-2hr and then further fired after addition of additional NH4Br in the presence of a reducing agent such as active carbon at 1,000-1,200 deg.C for 1-3hr to obtain a phosphor of the formula (Y1-xGdx)OBr:Ce(wherein 0.05<=x<0.80).
