PURPOSE:To eliminate the effects of print quality, etc. of a bar code and to improve the bar code reading factor, by providing plural reflectors and scanning repetitively the bar code surface with plural scan lines formed by the reflected light of those reflectors. CONSTITUTION:A light beam flux (output light 8) emitted from a laser tube (light source 1) is stopped down by a focus control lens system 2 and turned into a light beam used for scan over a bar code 9. Then the light beam scans over the code 9 with the movement of a scanning mirror 5. The reflected light 10 of said scan is reflected by the mirror 5 and condensed by a condenser lens 11 after passing through a glass plate 4. This condensed light is made incident on a photodetecting element 7. The reflectors 12 (12A and 12B) are canned by a light beam through a scan mechanism consisting of the mirror 5 and a scan motor 6. Then the reflected beams sent from the reflectors 12A and 12B are turned into scan lines 12A and 12B which scan over the code 9 (bar code label) 9.
