PURPOSE:To improve the quality and yield of a product by detecting and monitoring the quantity of heat extraction of the cooling water in cooling rolls, the surface temp. of the rolls, the expansion rate of the roll diameter, etc. at all times and adjusting the circumferential speed of the rolls when abnormality arises. CONSTITUTION:A molten metal 9 is dropped from a pouring nozzle 10 to the kiss part 13 of twin rolls 11, 12 by which heat is extracted from the molten metal and the molten metal is quickly cooled and solidified to a thin sheet 14. A thermometer 15 for the roll surface temp. and a device 16 for measuring the thermal expansion rate of the roll diameter are disposed respectively near the rolls 11, 12. Calorimeters 10, 20 for the heat extraction of the cooling water of the rolls 11, 12 are further pro vided to the cooling water system. The quantity of the heat extraction of the cooling water in the rolls 11, 12, the surface temp. and the expansion rate of the roll diameter are monitored at all times by the above-mentioned method. The abnormality is predicted by any among the measuring devices 15, 16, 19, 20 and the circumferential speed of the rolls is automatically adjusted if there is the possibility of the winding of the sheet 14 on the rolls 11, 12. The winding of the sheet 14 around the rolls is thus prevented and the quality and yield of the product is improved.
