The closing mechanism is for a window on a horizontal or vertical axis by means of a single rod, or two working in opposite directions. The splined shaft (26) of a metal pinion (20) passes through a round bore (12) to fit in the hub of a handle. The pinion comprises a disc (22) from which an integral gear ring protrudes on one side, while on the other there are four bosses (32) at 90 deg. intervals, engaging in openings in the face of a plastics insert and whose radial edges are chamfered. A pair of cup-shaped spring washers facing opposite ways fit between the handle hub and the disc so as to press it against the insert (8). The pinion meshes with one or more racks with extensions for connection to the rods shutting the window.
