In the compression of crops comprising both stems and leaves, such as hay, the crop is separated into stems and leaves, if desired before or after drying, as it is conveyed to the compressor, and at least the leaves are compressed. The stems may be conveyed to a further compressor. Fig. 3 shows a portion of a suitable apparatus, auger 18 feeding the crop into a separator 22, wherein a rotatable drum 24 co-operates with a perforated concave 26, the leaves falling on to conveyer 28 to pass to pelletising press 50, and the stems passing to floor 32, being assisted by a transverse beater 34. |
