Liquid phase oxidation by gaseous oxygen, e.g. air, of 5-18C, -CH2- contg. hydrocarbons, esp. satd., cyclic hydrocarbons, to hydroxyl contng. compds., in the presence of 0.1-30 wt.% of 3-15C olefin initiators using metal group V or VI based catalysts such as V, Mo or W, esp. Mo, in a valency state is not 5. The metal is present as the acid, heteroacid or hetropolyacid anion, or as a per (salt) or heteropolysalt of these with (a) an (in)organic base, esp. quaternary ammonium compds., (cyclo)aliphatic-, aromatic- or heterocyclic amines, e.g. mono- and tri-methylamine, pyridine and diphenylamine, (b) an amide of formula:- R1CO.N(R2)R3 where R1 = H or hydrocarbon; R2, Ro = (independently) hydrocarbon or together form an N-contng. heterocycle, or (c) an acid amide of formula:- (where R4-9 are as for R2, R3), e.g. hexamethyl-, hexaphenyl- and N-morpholinotriamide. |
