PURPOSE:To remove n-paraffins, enhance the solvent performance and improve the liquefying reaction efficiency, by cooling a circulating solvent consisting of a (hydrogenated) medium heavy oil component, removing the deposited solid material, and using the resultant solvent as a solvent for liquefying coal. CONSTITUTION:Part of the total amount of a solvent which is a medium heavy oil component obtained by liquefying coal as it is or hydrogenated medium heavy oil circulated for use as a solvent for liquefying the coal is cooled to 20 deg.C or below to deposit n-paraffins. After removing the n-paraffins, the resultant solvent is used as the solvent for liquefying the coal. EFFECT:Trouble such as choking of pipelines can be prevented to stabilize the operation, and the n-paraffins which are useful resources can be recovered.
