In a process for improving the quality of charge material, which contains not less than about 200 ppm of metals and has an API gravity of less than about 20 DEG and Conradson carbon of more than about 8%, by means of hydroconversion with hydrogen in the presence of a naturally occurring inorganic material as a catalyst, the invention comprises, inter alia, a subsequent fractionation of the hydroconverted product and solvent deasphalting of the distilled bottom products and, if necessary, a hydrodesulphurisation of atmospheric distillates and, separately from this, mixtures of vacuum gas oils and deasphalted oils. When a heavy crude of 12 DEG API, 10% of Conradson carbon, 3.2% of sulphur and 350 ppm of metals was added to the process, more than 90% (volume/volume) of a synthetic crude with 25 DEG API, 0.17% of sulphur and only 13.8% (volume/volume) of a 510 DEG C+ (950 DEG F+) fraction were obtained.
