PURPOSE:To select arbitrarily an operation such as displaying character information and erasing it by recording a signal of character information, a signal for showing the top of a character string, a signal for showing its end and a signal for showing start and termination periods of a display. CONSTITUTION:It is assumed that the color burst signal 2 of a composite video signal A includes a character signal. A character signal separating device 3 separates the character signal from the composite video signal A, and a display control signal separating device 4 separates the signals for showing the top and end of the character string from the separated character signal to transmit them to a display controller 5. It executes the array control so as to dispose character patterns which a character pattern generator 6 sequentially generates in a memory device 7, receiving the character signal, and supplies a signal for showing synthesization of them with other pictures, or the stop timing of the synthesization to a video synthesization processor 8, which synthesizes a composite video signal B capable of displaying a popular video signal and signals of the character string on the same screen. By the operation of a switch installed outside, the synthesization of the character string with the popular video signal is carried out or stopped.
