<p>An improved operating system for increasing the data transfer rate between a host computer (101) and a data terminal (104...107) while still allowing the utilization of flow control. The system is useful in multi-user computers where the connected data terminals are communicating large amounts of data with the host computer system. During the transfer data from the host computer to the terminal, the operating system controlling the host computer first disables the use of the designated characters as flow control characters, starts the transfer of information to the terminal, performs operations to determine whether or not the terminal is approaching the point where it can no longer receive data, and enables the utilization of the designated characters as flow control characters when the terminal reaches the latter point. The operating system thus allows the data terminal to control the amount of characters received and a similar operation is performed during the transmitting of characters from the data terminal to the host computer system.</p> |
