NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (A is halogen, methoxy or methyl). EXAMPLE:2-(Methylphenyl)-2-metehyl-4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane. USE:A radically polymerizable monomer having low volume-shrinkage in polymerization. It can be polymerized with heat, microwave, ultraviolet ray, electron ray, etc. The obtained polymer has excellent adhesivity to metal, glass, etc.,. and is useful as an adhesive, composite material, casting material, paint,molding material, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by dehydrating the ketone compound of formula II (e.g. methyl acetophenone) with the diol of formula III (Y is halogen) (e.g. monochlorohydrin) in benzene in the presence of an acid catalyst, and subjecting the resultant compound of formula IV to dehydrohalogenation reaction in an alkali.
