In such a system, the collective line groups to which a particularly large number of subscriber lines belong are specially identified. In the case of an incoming external call to such a collective line group, the calling subscriber line is immediately provided with the call-connected signal. The subsequent process of hunting through the subscriber lines of the relevant collective line group for an idle subscriber line is continued within the relevant collective line group until an idle subscriber line has been found or until a subscriber line becomes idle.
