An ignition system for an engine has a transformer with a primary winding (L1) and a secondary winding (L2). A magnetic pulse timer (20) provides a bipolar signal to the input circuit of a pair of transistors (Qa-Qb, Qn-Qp, Q2-Q3, Q4-Q5, Q6-Q7) of opposite conductivities. The transistor pair is simultaneously activated and deactivated to provide or discontinue current flow in the primary winding and to create an induced voltage in the primary winding. Simplified circuits having single transistors (Q8, Q9) are provided for timer (20, 20a, 30) actuation. Other circuits include transistor pairs (Q10-Q11, Q12-Q13) connected in Darlington manner, and include transistor pairs (Q14-Q15, Q16-Q17) directly coupled to each other and activated by the timer. A high power ignition system utilizing signal type transistors (Q18, Q19) as a bipolar pair drives a power transistor (Q20, Q21) to obtain extremely high voltage and current output, this system having all transistors ON and OFF at substantially the same time. Directly coupled transistor pairs of opposite conductivities (Q22-Q23, Q24-Q25, Q26-Q27, Q28-Q29) are included in ignition circuits wherein a portion of the ignition transient signal is fed back to the input of these transistor pairs to effect increased duty cycles analogous to the duty cycle of an AC fed ignition system. Circuits involving bipolar transistor activation (Q30-Q31) feed a power transistor (Q32) to also effect an increased duty cycle by feedback methods.
|
