The invention relates to a scrap-winding machine with which scrap wire and scrap strip can be wound to form compacted coils. The object of the invention is to control the winding process such that an overloading of the machine or of the individual machine elements is avoided. This is achieved in that, when a defined compaction of the scrap coil is reached, a load is established by virtue of the pressure roll at intervals such that with sustained continuation of the winding operation, a compaction takes place such that a virtually constant torque acts on the winding shaft. <IMAGE>
