An awning (1) comprises a winding core (6), a drive (8) for rotating the winding core (6), and a sheeting (16) having one end which is connected to the winding core (6), for rolling up onto the latter or unrolling therefrom, and a free end (17). In order to be able to tension the sheeting (16), by means of the same drive, after unrolling, the free end (17) is connected to a retaining part (18) which is movably guided in an unrolling direction and is coupled to the drive (8) such that, during unrolling, said drive (8) moves it away, in the unrolling direction, from the winding core (6) and, at the end of the unrolling procedure, the free end (17) is guided in the unrolling direction at a rate which is greater than the rate at which the sheeting unrolls from the winding core (6). <IMAGE>
