The mechanical oscillator for resonance operation is suitable, in particular, for a beam chopper and has a mechanically stiff oscillating arm representing a fixed mass, a spring acting on the oscillating arm and having a fixed spring constant, as well as a drive for the oscillating arm with a positive feedback circuit for self-excitation at the resonant frequency of the mass/spring system consisting of the oscillating arm and the spring. In order to measure and/or influence the time ratio of the two half cycles (tg, to), provision is made of at least one first magnetic system (9; 5) arranged on the oscillating arm (1) and of at least one second magnetic system (7, 8; 6) which is operationally connected to the first magnetic system. <IMAGE>
