In a method of making a moulded article of foamed plastics material, the expandable plastics material is pre-foamed by heat-treatment to a density which is less than the required density of the finished article, the prefoamed material is then introduced into a compression mould and compressed to the required finished form, and is then cooled in the compression mould. Preferably the plastic material is prefoamed substantially to the limit of its expansibility and introduced to the compression mould immediately after the pre-foaming operation, e.g. by means of a steam jet, in which case the steam may be utilized at least partly for heating the mould. The mould may be additionally heated from the exterior. |
