An antibiotic, TAN-588, produced by bacteria belonging to genus Empedobacter or Risobacter, p-nitrobenzyl- or benzhydryl ester derivatives thereof, N-deacetyl derivatives thereof, and salts thereof have an anti-bacterial effect on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and can be used as agents for treating bacterial diseases of mammal, fowl, etc.
